New video models emotions for young children and toddlers with autism spectrum disorders

Learning how to recognize various emotions in ourselves and in others is an important first step in teaching good social skills. Model Me Kids®, LLC, the producer of the popular Model Me Kids® educational video series, has just introduced a new DVD package to teach children 2 to 7 years of age about common emotions by modeling facial cues.

Model Me Faces & Emotions™ covers the emotions of happy, sad, afraid, tired, angry, excited, surprised, bored, calm, proud, love and shy. Each scene lasts between 1-2 minutes. At the end of each chapter is a storyboard summarizing the emotions that have been presented. This unique merger of video modeling and music therapy is designed to help teach skills in a way that appeals to the strengths of children with developmental disabilities. Each emotion is demonstrated in more than one situation and across environments to help promote generalization of each concept. Graphics and music are used to make the video appealing to children with Autism, Asperger Syndrome, and Nonverbal Learning Disorders.

The DVD also includes an insert with song lyrics so that children can sing along. A free CD-Rom of photographs is included with each video purchased. The photos are designed to demonstrate, review, and test the skills shown in the video and can be printed as flashcards for reference or viewed as a computer slideshow.

The video is narrated with songs by Rachel Rambach, a Board-Certified Music Therapist ™. Rachel received her B.A. in Music at Rollins College and her Masters of Music Therapy from Illinois State University. She is a board-certified music therapist, specializing in work with children who have diagnoses on the autism spectrum. Rachel created the music therapy program at the Hope Institute for Children & Families in Springfield, Illinois, where she works full time in addition to maintaining a private practice.
