Conversation Scripts

Each of our videos in The Conversation Library comes with a downloadable and printable video modeling script for skill rehearsal. Practicing conversations is an effective tool for students across all three PBIS tiers. By using videos of peer models, students at Tier 1 (who benefit from general guidance) can watch and practice common social interactions, such as greeting peers or following directions. For students requiring more focused support, such as those in Tiers 2 and 3, video modeling scripts can target specific skills and offer intensive, individualized scenarios.

About Conversations & Autism

Conversation can be a complex social interaction, requiring the ability to interpret both verbal and nonverbal cues, understand context, and respond appropriately in real-time. For individuals with autism, these layers of communication may present significant challenges. Some people with autism may struggle with understanding the subtleties of tone, facial expressions, or body language, while others may find it difficult to follow the back-and-forth flow of conversation.

Additionally, processing the emotional content of conversations, grasping abstract ideas, or shifting topics quickly can feel overwhelming. This can sometimes lead to misunderstandings, feelings of isolation, or frustration in social interactions.

However, with appropriate support and tools, many individuals with autism can develop stronger conversational skills. Video modeling is one effective tool, allowing them to observe and learn by watching examples of social interactions.

By breaking conversations into smaller, more manageable components, learners can focus on specific aspects, such as greeting someone, maintaining eye contact, or asking questions. Repetitive viewing and practice help individuals become more comfortable with conversational patterns, boosting their confidence. Over time, they can apply these skills in real-life settings, improving their ability to communicate and connect with others.
